#416: How to Support Healthcare Workers Now — Plus Urgent Suggestions for Uber Eats, Hilton, Amazon,...

I expect next week will be an exceptionally difficult week for many people and many cities, New York City chief among them. There are several very urgent needs. This episode will highlight things that can be done to help healthcare workers (food, temp housing, PPE, ventilators and vent modification for higher capacity, etc.), as well as a few companies well positioned to immediately help. I would encourage you to think of healthcare workers, alongside people working on vaccine development and drug development, as the walls of our collective city. By protecting and helping them, we protect and help ourselves and everyone around us. If they fail, we all fail. These brothers and sisters on the front lines need help now, and it cannot wait a week. If it weren't for healthcare workers, I would be dead. If not for healthcare workers, my dad would be dead, and three uncles and two aunts would also be dead. If you are lucky enough to be healthy and reading this, you likely owe some thanks to healthcare workers. They are the (usually) invisible safety net for us all. Thank you for listening to this one. It's important. Jack Kornfield — How to Find Peace Amidst COVID-19, How to Cultivate Calm in Chaos | Brought to you by [FreshBooks] (http://freshbooks.com/tim) and [99designs] (http://99designs.com/tim) . "We have the opportunity, even in difficult times, to let our spirit shine." — Jack Kornfield Jack Kornfield ( [@JackKornfield] (https://twitter.com/JackKornfield) ) trained as a Buddhist monk in the monasteries of Thailand, India, and Burma, shortly thereafter becoming one of the key teachers to introduce Buddhist mindfulness practice to the West. He has taught meditation internationally since 1974. Jack has had a profound and direct impact on my life, and I'm thrilled to have him on the podcast once again. Jack co-founded the [Insight Meditation Society] (http://www.dharma.org/) in Barre, Massachusetts, with fellow meditation teachers [Sharon Salzberg] (https://tim.blog/2017/11/03/sharon-salzberg/) and [Joseph Goldstein] (http://www.dharma.org/ims/joseph_goldstein.html) and the [Spirit Rock] (http://www.spiritrock.org/) Center in Woodacre, California. He offers a brilliant online training program for those who want to learn to teach meditation at [JackKornfield.com.] (https://jackkornfield.com/) This episode is more of a personal therapy session for yours truly in some respects. You will notice that I sound anxious and unsure in this interview, and that is very much by design.I think it is unhelpful when people in the public eye hide the fact that they also struggle, and it puts them on this illusory pedestal that I think is ultimately self-defeating. Instead, I want to share with you that no matter how much Stoic philosophy I read, no matter how often I meditate, there are times when I struggle, and this week is one of them. I also hope that you'll listen to portions of this conversation multiple times. There are a number of exercises that Jack shares that I will certainly be listening to in the upcoming weeks. #411: Richard Turner — The Magical Phenom Who Will Blow Your Mind

Richard Turner — The Magical Phenom Who Will Blow Your Mind | Brought to you by [Nulo] (http://nulo.com/tim) and [Inktel] (http://www.inktel.com/tim/) . "Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect." — Richard Turner I am very, very excited to introduce this interview, as I've been wanting to meet today's guest, Richard Turner, for almost two years now. I first came across Richard Turner ( [richardturner52.com] (https://richardturner52.com/) , [youtube.com/richardturner52] (https://www.youtube.com/RichardTurner52) ) in the documentary [Dealt] (https://www.amazon.com/Dealt-Richard-Turner/dp/B076HDLY9W/ref=as_li_ss_tl?keywords=dealt+documentary&qid=1582137992&sr=8-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=offsitoftimfe-20&linkId=7fb6ddc77de663e98a678b6468739411&language=en_US) , directed by Luke Korem. I can't remember the last time I finished a documentary, only to want to watch it again immediately afterward. I also can't remember a doc that made me as emotional as Dealt did, pushing me from laughter to tears. It has 95 percent on [Rotten Tomatoes] (https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/dealt) and won the [2017 Documentary Feature Audience Choice Award] (https://variety.com/2017/film/news/sxsw-2017-audience-award-winners-1202011563/#article-comments) at the South by Southwest Film Festival. Everyone should watch it. But back to my guest: Richard Turner is regarded as the best card mechanic and among the best up-close magicians in the world. He has entertained millions of people, including notables like Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Secretary of State Colin Powell, actor Brad Pitt, sports legend Muhammad Ali, and many more. His skill with a deck of cards has been featured on television shows around the world, including a performance on [Penn & Teller: Fool Us] (https://www.cwtv.com/shows/penn-teller-fool-us/) , in which [Penn Jillette] (https://tim.blog/2020/01/09/penn-jillette/) admitted, "Richard Turner is one of the finest sleight-of-hand artists who has ever lived. He fooled us with every single move he did!" Note: Toward the end of the interview, you will hear Richard performing card tricks. He did them in front of me, and he absolutely blew my mind. I highly recommend checking out the interview on YouTube, as I made sure to have video from multiple angles for this episode. Just go to [youtube.com/timferriss] (http://youtube.com/timferriss) . Not to sound like a mullet-wearing Long Island boy (which I've been), but this footage is simply fucking amazing. Oh, and did I mention that Richard is completely blind? That's right. You're in for a ride, my friends. This episode is brought to you by [Nulo] (http://nulo.com/tim) . Our pets bring out the best in us and are you doing your part to bring out the best in them? [Nulo] (http://nulo.com/tim) is an independently owned pet food company based in Austin that delivers the very best pet nutrition with high-meat, low-carb recipes for dogs and cats. In fact, it's what I feed Molly, my own best friend. When I switched Molly over to [Nulo] (http://nulo.com/tim) a couple of years ago, it not only made an immediate difference in the way she looks — her coat is softer and shinier than ever before — but in how she behaves. I can't imagine feeding Molly anything else at this point. At the root of many of my decisions is a simple question: "How can I invest money to improve my quality of life?" Or "how can I spend moderate money to save significant time?" [Inktel] (http://www.inktel.com/tim/) is one of those investments. They are a turnkey solution for all of your customer care needs. Their team answers more than 1 million customer service requests each year. They can also interact with your customers across all platforms, including email, phone, social media, text, and chat.
