The Trail Went Cold – Episode 375 – Vernon Shipman, Charles Glass, and Louise Davis Shumate

July 17, 1966. Hendersonville, North Carolina. A pair of close friends, 43-year old Vernon Shipman and 36-year old Charles Glass, both go missing and Vernon’s abandoned car is soon found on a dirt road near his residence. Five days later, Vernon and Charles’ bodies are discovered in an isolated area alongside the body of a 61-year old Asheville resident named Louise Davis Shumate and all three victims have been bludgeoned to death. Even though Louise does not appear to have any known connection to Vernon or Charles, multiple witnesses report having seen all three of them inside Vernon’s car with an unidentified man prior to their deaths. Decades later, some investigators express their belief that a deceased criminal named Edward Thompson committed the murders, but there is no conclusive evidence to implicate him. Since Vernon and Charles were both gay men, could the murders have been a hate crime? If not, what was the actual motive and how did Louise become mixed up in the whole situation? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore one of the most bizarre unsolved triple homicides you’ll ever hear about. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office at (828) 697-4596. May 15, 1988. Greenwood, South Carolina. After spending the evening at a basketball court, eight-year old Malakia “Kia” Logan heads back towards her apartment on her bicycle. Even though she only has to travel 300 yards, Kia never arrives and her abandoned bicycle is found. Two years later, a skull is discovered in a wooded area about 35 miles away and DNA testing eventually identifies it as belonging to Kia. In 2002, a suspect named Charles Wade Hampton is charged with Kia’s murder after he confesses to the crime, but since he recants his confession and there is no other corroborating evidence against him, the charges against him are dropped. The Trail Went Cold – Episode 371 – Ginni Wood, Kelly Gaskins, and Ervin Williams

March 10, 2007. Chocowinity, North Carolina. The mother of 19-year old university student Ginni Wood calls her up on her cell phone, but after their brief conversation ends, Ginni is never heard from again. Ginni told her mother she had travelled to Brownsville, Texas for spring break in order to visit her 19-year old best friend, Kelly Gaskins, and Kelly’s 23-year old boyfriend, Ervin Williams. However, it turns out that Ervin is a fugitive who fled North Carolina after failing to appear in court on numerous felony charges and Kelly is also wanted for a probation violation. This leads to speculation that the couple travelled across the border into Mexico in order to evade the authorities before Ginni joined them there, but Ervin and Kelly are also not heard from again. The Trail Went Cold – Episode 370 – Jeffrey Digman, Billy Ray Hargrove, and Mike Carmichael

January 22, 1989. Temecula, California. The housemate of 30-year old Marine Captain Jeffrey Digman returns to their residence and discovers that Jeffrey has been shot to death inside his bedroom. Since a gun Jeffrey owns is lying next to him, his death is ruled to be a suicide and investigators theorize that he had become despondent over a recent transfer to Puerto Rico. However, Jeffrey’s parents discover some suspicious discrepancies to make them suspect he was murdered and while his cause of death is eventually changed from “suicide” to “undetermined”, there are no conclusive answers about how he was killed. February 20, 1992. South Korea. 30-year old Army Staff Sergeant Billy Ray Hargrove is found hanging by a parachute cord from a tree outside his residence and his death is ruled to be a suicide. Billy Ray’s best friend, 37-year old Army Sergeant First Class Mike Carmichael becomes convinced that Billy Ray was murdered and vows to perform his own independent investigation. However, six weeks later, Mike is discovered hanging by a parachute cord from a locker handle inside his barracks office. Even though Mike’s death is also ruled to be a suicide, his family believes that he was murdered in order to cover up the truth about Billy Ray’s death. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore two suspicious and controversial suicide cases from the military involving three different servicemen whose families believed were the victims of foul play. The Trail Went Cold – Episode 369 – Update, Part 5

The Trail Went Cold – Episode 368 – Lynne Harper, Part 2

June 9, 1959. Clinton, Ontario. After failing to return home, 12-year old Lynne Harper is reported missing and her body is discovered in a woodlot two days later. She has been sexually assaulted and strangled to death with her own blouse and suspicion turns towards her 14-year old classmate, Steven Truscott, who claims that he gave Lynne a ride to the highway on his bicycle and saw her climb into a passing car. Steven is soon charged, convicted and sentenced to death for Lynne’s murder, but his sentence is commuted to life imprisonment and he is paroled in 1969. Decades later, Steven files a successful appeal to have his conviction overturned, but there is still a lot of debate about who was actually responsible for Lynne Harper’s murder. Last week, we released Part One of our special eight-year anniversary episode of “The Trail Went Cold” about one of the most controversial murder cases in the history of Canada. This week, in Part Two, we will share the rest of the story before breaking down and analyzing all the details about the crime. One year later, a severed foot is found washed up on a beach 45 miles from Patricia’s residence. While DNA testing eventually confirms that the foot belongs to Patricia, the rest of her remains are never found and there is no explanation for how she died. The Trail Went Cold – Episode 365 – Phylicia Thomas and Jennifer Barziloski

February 11, 2004. Lake Township, Pennsylvania. After returning home from work, 22-year old Phylicia Thomas goes missing and her boyfriend’s best friend, Steven Allen Martin, soon becomes a person of interest. Two-and-a-half years earlier, an 18-year old friend of Phylicia’s named Jennifer Barziloski had also disappeared and since Steve was the last known person to see Jennifer alive, there is speculation that the cases are connected. Over the years, rumours circulate that Phylicia may have been murdered at a party, but while Jennifer’s skull is found in a wooded area in 2010, there are no conclusive answers about how she died and Phylicia remains a missing person. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore two unsolved cases involving young women who went missing under suspicious circumstances from the same area. The Trail Went Cold – Episode 364 – The Lane Bryant Shooting

February 2, 2008. Tinley Park, Illinois. Police are summoned to a Lane Bryant clothing store at the Brookside Marketplace Shopping Center and discover that five victims have been fatally shot in the back room: the 42-year old store manager Rhoda McFarland, and four customers, 37-year old Connie Wolfolk, 34-year old Jennifer Bishop, 33-year old Carrie Hudek Chiuso, and 22-year old Sarah Szafranski. Even though another store employee was wounded with a bullet which grazed her neck, she winds up surviving and tells police that the shooting was committed by a black male. While the crime is suspected to be a robbery gone wrong, investigators are unable to find or identify the perpetrator or make much sense of his actions. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the Lane Bryant Shooting, a baffling crime involving five murdered victims which has somehow managed to remain unsolved for 16 years. Nineteen days later, another San Antonio girl, seven-year old Erica Botello, is abducted from outside her apartment complex. The bodies of each victim are soon found at separate locations one day apart on the same weekend, but investigators are inclined to believe the murders are not connected. Both cases feature a number of compelling suspects, including an individual who was actively involved in the original search effort for Heidi, but there is not enough evidence to conclusively link anyone to either of these crimes. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the unsolved murders of two separate girls which traumatized the city of San Antonio. If you have any information about the murder of Heidi Seeman, please contact the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Missing Persons Hotline at 1-800-346-3243 or the Texas Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-TIPS (8477). If you have any information on the murder of Erica Botello, please contact the San Antonio Police Department at (210) 207-7273. The Trail Went Cold – Episode 362 – Margaret Dash, Retha Hiers, and Donyelle Johnson

June 14, 1974. Clearwater, Florida. After borrowing her daughter’s car and leaving her home, 38-year old Margaret Dash never returns and the abandoned vehicle is discovered in St. Petersburg one month later. It turns out that Margaret had been involved in an extramarital affair with a man named Cleveland Hill, who supposedly threatened to kill her. Over the next 15 years, two other Florida women – 43-year old Retha Hiers and 21-year old Donyelle Johnson – also vanish without a trace after conducting an affair with Cleveland and there are allegations that he made threats against them as well. While there is suspicion that Cleveland was responsible for all of these disappearances, there is not enough evidence to implicate him and the three missing women are never found. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we cover a trio of unsolved missing persons cases which are linked together by the same man. If you have any information about the disappearance of Margaret Dash, please contact the Clearwater Police Department at (727) 562-4242. The Trail Went Cold – Episode 361 – Jack Brown

January 11, 1984. Ypsilanti, Michigan. Two armed men enter a real estate and insurance office before one of them fires a shot into the neck of the 47-year old owner, Jack Brown. The assailants then lock the office’s other employees inside the bathroom before fleeing the scene and Jack dies in the hospital several hours later. Prior to his death, Jack had hinted that he might be involved in something which led to him being murdered, but the two perpetrators are not identified and the motive for the crime remains unclear. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a baffling murder which resembled a professional hit and has remained unsolved for 40 years. In addition, we will also be discussing the unsolved murders of 54-year old Elizabeth Shumate, 60-year old Frances Ivey and 46-year old JoAnn Brown, a trio of real estate agents who were shot to death inside their office in Houston, Texas in August 1983. The Trail Went Cold – Episode 360 – Patrick Mullins

January 27, 2013. Bradenton, Florida. After taking his boat out onto the Braden River, 52-year old Patrick Mullins fails to return home and the abandoned boat is discovered several miles away in Egmont Channel the following day. Nine days after he vanished, Pat is found floating in Tampa Bay and it turns out he was fatally shot through the head and weighed down in the water with an anchor tied to a rope wrapped around his body. His official cause of death is listed as “undetermined”, but while law enforcement leans towards suicide, Pat’s loved ones notice some odd discrepancies to make them believe he was murdered. A family friend displays some suspicious behavior to suggest he might have knowledge of what happened, but there is not enough evidence to implicate him. Was Patrick Mullins the victim of foul play or was his death actually an elaborate suicide? For our first “Trail Went Cold” episode of 2024, we shall explore a controversial case which was featured on the Netflix reboot of “Unsolved Mysteries”. If you have any information about the death of Patrick Mullins, please contact the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office at (941) 747-3011 or Manatee County Crimestoppers at (866) 634-TIPS (8477). The Trail Went Cold – Episode 359 – Update, Part 4

Since “The Trail Went Cold” originally launched in February 2016, we have featured over 400 cold cases and unsolved mysteries on the podcast. A number of these cases have wound up either being solved or having major developments, so things have reached the point where we have been able to release four special “update” episodes over the past four years. On this particular episode, we’ll be discussing the surprising updates in such cases as the 1930 abduction of two-year old Mary Agnes Moroney, the 1987 murder of six-year old Jeremy Stoner, and how the investigation into the 1945 disappearance of Mary Jane Vangilder wound up leading to the unexpected identification of another decedent. These are just some of the cases we’ll be discussing in our fourth special “update” episode of “The Trail Went Cold”. Here are the links to our three previous “update” episodes: [The Trail Went Cold – Episode 155 – Update!] (https://www.trailwentcold.com/2020/01/01/the-trail-went-cold-episode-155-update/) [The Trail Went Cold – Episode 257 – Update, Part 2] (https://www.trailwentcold.com/2021/12/29/the-trail-went-cold-episode-257-update-part-2/) [The Trail Went Cold – Episode 310 – Update, Part 3] (https://www.trailwentcold.com/2023/01/04/the-trail-went-cold-episode-310-update-part-3/) “The Trail Went Cold” is on Patreon. The Trail Went Cold – Episode 358 – Amber Crum

December 26, 1983. Dallas, Texas. Two-year old Amber Crum is reported missing after James Britt Monroe, the live-in boyfriend of Amber’s mother, Stephanie Hughes, informs police that Amber was abducted from his parked pick-up truck while he was inside a grocery store. Weeks later, Britt is arrested on suspicion of murder after Stephanie implicates him in Amber’s death. However, when Stephanie testifies during a preliminary hearing, she recants her original story, so Britt is released from custody and a grand jury declines to indict him due to lack of evidence. In 2007, a convicted child murderer named David Elliott Penton is looked at as a person of interest in Amber’s disappearance, but there is no evidence to implicate him. Was Amber actually the victim of a stranger abduction? Or was someone close to her responsible for her disappearance? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a controversial missing children’s case which has gone without answers for 40 years. Special thanks to listener Jana Goetz for narrating the opening of this episode. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Dallas Police Department at (214) 670-4426. The Trail Went Cold – Episode 357 – Paul Logan and Tracey Mertens

December 23, 1993. Consett, England. 25-year old delivery driver Paul Logan brings a food order from a Chinese takeaway restaurant to a remote farm, but when he arrives, the property’s owners inform him that they never placed the order. When Paul attempts to leave, he is ambushed at the farm’s gate and bludgeoned to death with a blunt instrument. It becomes apparent that the takeaway order was a set-up to lure Paul to his death and that multiple people were involved. But even though rumours circulate that Paul was murdered by someone with a personal grudge against him, no one is ever charged with the crime. December 23, 1994. Eaton, England. 31-year old Tracey Mertens is discovered on the steps of a local church with burns on 95 % of her body, so she is rushed to the hospital and passes away twelve hours later. Before her death, Tracey tells police that she was abducted from her former residence in Birmingham by two black men, who drove her to Eaton and set her on fire after pouring a can of petrol over her body. Suspicion mounts that Tracey was targeted because her spouse owed a drug debt to some dangerous people, but he denies any knowledge of what happened and Tracey’s killers are never identified. The Trail Went Cold – Episode 356 – Cathy Jo Bohlken

December 26, 1993. Monticello, Iowa. After she fails to show up for work, 22-year old Cathy Jo Bohlken is found dead inside the bedroom of her apartment. She has been bound with duct tape and has a plastic bag over her head and was sexually assaulted and stabbed at least 54 times. Two years later, Travis Jamieson, a friend of Cathy’s younger brother who was only 16 years old at the time of the crime, is charged with the murder. Even though DNA testing links Travis to a semen sample found in Cathy’s body, there is no other physical evidence against him. Since Travis’ defence attorneys bring up issues with the validity of the DNA testing at his trial, he winds up being acquitted and set free. Did Travis Jamieson get away with the murder of Cathy Jo Bohlken or was someone else actually responsible? We will attempt to answer that question, as we present this month’s first “Trail Went Cold” episode about cases which took place around Christmastime. The Trail Went Cold – Episode 355 – Amy Wroe Bechtel

July 24, 1997. Fremont County, Wyoming. After spending the day running errands, 24-year old Amy Wroe Bechtel never returns home and her abandoned car is discovered on a remote road in Shoshone National Forest. Even though he claims to have an alibi, Amy’s husband, Steve Bechtel, is looked at as a potential suspect by law enforcement, due to his unwillingness to take a polygraph test. However, the investigation eventually focuses on convicted murderer Dale Wayne Eaton, who was supposedly in the area when Amy went missing, but there is no evidence to implicate him and no trace of Amy is ever found. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the puzzling disappearance of Amy Wroe Bechtel, who has continued to remain a missing person for the past 26 years. The Trail Went Cold – Episode 354 – Danielle LaRue

December 31, 2002. Vancouver, British Columbia. The Vancouver Police Department receive an anonymous letter containing a remorseful confession from someone who claims to have been responsible for the death of a sex worker. While the victim’s name is not mentioned, investigators eventually suspect that she might be 24-year old Danielle LaRue, a sex worker from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside neighbourhood who seemed to vanish without explanation one month before the letter arrived. Even though the police ask the letter writer to come forward, this individual is not heard from again and no trace of Danielle is ever found. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we share the story of Danielle LaRue, an Indigenous woman who lived an incredibly tragic life before she went missing. We will also explore the stories of Ashley Machiskinic and Verna Simard, two other Indigenous women from the Downtown Eastside, who both died suspicious deaths after falling from a window at the Regent Hotel. If you have information about any of the featured cases, please contact the Vancouver Police Department’s Cold Case Unit at (604) 717-2500. The Trail Went Cold – Episode 353 – The Chen Family Murders

October 8, 2014. Guilderland, New York. The bodies of a Chinese immigrant family – 39-year old Jin Feng Chen, his 38-year old wife Hai Yan Li, and their two sons, 10-year old Anthony and 7-year old Eddy – are found inside their bungalow and they have been stabbed and bludgeoned to death. While Jin Feng worked at a local Chinese restaurant, rumours circulate that he may have been involved in illegal activity, such as the trafficking of undocumented workers, and this led to his family being killed. However, these rumours are never substantiated, so the motive for the crime and the identity of the perpetrator is never determined. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the Chen family murders, a brutal crime involving four victims in which there has been a surprisingly low number of strong leads. If you have any information about this case, please contact the New York State Police, Troop G, Major Crimes at (518) 783-3212 Additional Reading: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chen_family_killings] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chen_family_killings) [https://www.aetv.com/real-crime/chen-family-murder] (https://www.aetv.com/real-crime/chen-family-murder) [https://web.archive.org/web/20181001142359/https://www.newsday.com/news/new-york/chinatown-community-eyed-as-cops-work-to-solve-quadruple-slaying-upstate-1.9601236] (https://web.archive.org/web/20181001142359/https://www.newsday.com/news/new-york/chinatown-community-eyed-as-cops-work-to-solve-quadruple-slaying-upstate-1.9601236) [https://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/10/nyregion/2-children-among-4-found-dead-in-an-upstate-home.html] (https://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/10/nyregion/2-children-among-4-found-dead-in-an-upstate-home.html) [https://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Year-after-slaughter-of-Guilderland-family-6551378.php] (https://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Year-after-slaughter-of-Guilderland-family-6551378.php) [https://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Evidence-technicians-return-to-seen-of-4-killings-5813957.php] (https://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Evidence-technicians-return-to-seen-of-4-killings-5813957.php) [https://altamontenterprise.com/10092015/year-after-chinese-family-murdered-no-suspects-here-or-elsewhere-0] (https://altamontenterprise.com/10092015/year-after-chinese-family-murdered-no-suspects-here-or-elsewhere-0) [https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/10/13/cookas-tale] (https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/10/13/cookas-tale) [https://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2015/03/mississippi_gulf_coast_triple.html] (https://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2015/03/mississippi_gulf_coast_triple.html) [https://abc13.com/sun-family-killings-feng-lu-arrest-murder-of-4-members-massacre/12228938/] (https://abc13.com/sun-family-killings-feng-lu-arrest-murder-of-4-members-massacre/12228938/) “The Trail Went Cold” is on Patreon. The Trail Went Cold – Episode 352 – Rae Ann Mossor and Norman Ladner

February 4, 1986. Roanoke, Virginia. 21-year old Rae Ann Mossor is found dead on the street outside her estranged boyfriend’s house with a shotgun wound to the chest. The shotgun is lying on the trunk of a nearby parked car and according to her boyfriend, Rae Ann had implied she would kill herself if he did not reconcile their relationship and he said he heard the fatal gunshot shortly after she left his residence. While Rae Ann’s death is officially ruled to be a suicide, her parents discover some suspicious discrepancies to make them believe she was murdered. August 21, 1989. Pearl River County, Mississippi. 17-year old Norman Ladner leaves his family’s farm to go hunting in a wooded area on their property. When Norman fails to return, his father eventually discovers his body in the woods with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The local authorities rule that Norman’s death was a suicide and that he likely shot himself with his own hunting rifle, but his parents dispute this and uncover some strange details which make them suspect that Norman may have been murdered after stumbling upon a drug deal. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we cover two controversial suicide cases featured on “Unsolved Mysteries” in which the victims’ loved ones believed that foul play had taken place. The Trail Went Cold – Episode 351 – Martha Moxley (Part 2)

October 31, 1975. Greenwich, Connecticut. After she fails to return home the previous night, the body of 15-year old Martha Moxley is discovered in her backyard. She has been stabbed in the neck and bludgeoned with a golf club and pieces of the shattered club are traced to the residence of the Skakels, a prominent family from the neighborhood. Decades later, one of the family’s children, Michael Skakel, who was 15 at the time of the crime, is charged and convicted of Martha’s murder. However, Michael’s conviction winds up being vacated on two separate occasions due to ineffective counsel at his trial, so he is released from prison. In 2020, the state announces that they have no plans to retry Michael, meaning there are no conclusive answers about what happened.
