131: The Alabama Axe Murderess

In June of 1959, the torsos of two men were found in a rural part of northeast Alabama. The gruesome discoveries sparked a media firestorm as locals feared they had a mad man stalking their homes. These kind of gruesome murders just didn’t happen in rural areas where folks didn’t even lock their doors at night. A three week investigation led law enforcement to a desolate farm, in Rabbittown, a small community in the tiny town of White Plains. A 30 year old woman named Viola Hyatt lived there with her elderly father and stepmother. Viola was soon arrested and the press went wild. Why would a shy, 30 year old woman kill two men and hack their bodies into pieces? Emily Fisher was a paragon of not only Memphis society and arts, but she was also heavily involved in charities for underprivileged youth. Ironically, her son Adrian, struggled socially. Introducing: Suspect from Wondery

A big Halloween party at an apartment complex in Redmond, Washington. Themed rooms and costumed partygoers. But by the end of the party, one of the hosts is dead. The police look to the partiers as the prime suspects: was it the guy in the devil mask, the bank robber, the construction worker? As investigators comb through forensic evidence, witness testimony, DNA, and even consult with a psychic, they zero in on one suspect in particular. But for what reason? Host and reporter Matthew Shaer (Over My Dead Body) returns to the scene of the crime, speaks with everyone about a night that still haunts them years later. It’s a series about race and policing, mislaid justice, cutting-edge science, and the kinds of weighty choices that cops and prosecutors make every day -- choices that, once made, are difficult to reverse. 128: The Belinda Temple Case, Part 2: The Trials of David Temple

After the brutal murder of Belinda Temple, an 8 month pregnant school teacher in 1999, the Harris County DA’s office took five years to finally charge her husband, David, with murder. They had an ace in the hole. They had star prosecutor Kelley Siegler. But David Temple’s family hired Dick DeGuerin, the guy who got Robert Durst off after he dismembered his landlord. The trial had the promised fireworks but afterwards, Kelly Siegler was accused of prosecutorial misconduct. So David Temple went to trial for a second time, 20 years after his wife was murdered. 127: The Belinda Temple Case, Part 1: The Husband

In January of 1999, 30 year old Belinda Temple, who was eight months pregnant, was found shot to death in her closet in Katy, Texas. Her husband, David Temple, was the obvious first suspect. But there wasn’t much evidence to connect him to the murder and he was seen on store cameras during the suspected time of the murder. But he had the oldest motive in the world. And Harris County DA’s Office would take almost five years to finally bring charges against him. The complicated legal wranglings and clash of two courtroom titans made this case a national sensation. And sometimes the very real woman, Belinda Temple, and her unborn daughter, Erin, are forgotten in the sensationalism. This is part 1 of 2 episodes. In June of 1994, a car was found in a ditch on a deserted stretch of Little Mountain Road in Newberry, South Carolina. A woman was found slumped over the steering wheel. Though the road was in a rural area thick with woods and steep ravines, where accidents often happen, police immediately suspected foul play.
