Amicus | TikTok Is Cooked, Trump Is Sentenced

While Donald J Trump was virtually fuming at his sentencing hearing in Judge Juan Merchan’s New York City courtroom on Friday morning, the nine justices of the US Supreme Court were taking their seats for oral arguments in the so-called [TikTok ban case] (https://slate.com/technology/2025/01/tiktok-ban-supreme-court-china-bytedance-grindr.html) . And while it only took [40 minutes for the president elect’s sentence of an ‘unconditional discharge’ to be pronounced] (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2025/01/why-donald-trump-criminal-sentence-matters.html) , the arguments over national security, the First Amendment, and an app that 170 million Americans use took a couple of hours longer.  Amicus has an analysis of all of it. First, Dahlia Lithwick and Mark Joseph Stern discuss whether and how Trump’s sentence matters, and what it tells us about the Supreme Court under Trump 2.0. Next, they’re joined by [ Gautam Hans] (https://bsky.app/profile/gshans.bsky.social) , clinical Professor of Law at Cornell Law School, who specializes in constitutional law, technology law and policy, to discuss why the Supreme Court seemed so very ready to reach right past the First Amendment and grab for national security in order to uphold the TikTok ban. ICYMI: Should I Join Bluesky?

Candice Lim is joined by Slate business and tech writer Nitish Pahwa and internet culture writer Steffi Cao to debate, defend, and decide how they’re going to face the internet this year. Each brought a personal query they’re on the fence about, and the remaining panelists will argue both sides before coming to a verdict. For example, should we join Bluesky? How can we resist the urge to fact-check our friends in their Instagram comments? And is it time to delete our texts? But first, they’re debating: does the internet care about analog awards shows, such as the [Golden Globes] (https://slate.com/culture/2025/01/golden-globes-2025-winners-upset-nikki-glaser.html) ? Slate Money: Why Netflix is Reducing Parental Leave

This week: Crypto companies are being debanked but they’re not the only ones. [Felix Salmon] (https://www.axios.com/authors/fsalmon) , [Emily Peck] (https://www.axios.com/authors/epeck) , and [Elizabeth Spiers] (https://www.elizabethspiers.com/) break down the conspiracy theory that debanking is a government attack on crypto. Deposits into this account are used to purchase 10 investment-grade and high-yield bonds. As of 9/26/24, the average, annualized yield to worst (YTW) across the Bond Account is greater than 6%. A bond’s yield is a function of its market price, which can fluctuate; therefore, a bond’s YTW is not “locked in” until the bond is purchased, and your yield at time of purchase may be different from the yield shown here. The “locked in” YTW is not guaranteed; you may receive less than the YTW of the bonds in the Bond Account if you sell any of the bonds before maturity or if the issuer defaults on the bond.
