How To!: Parent Your Depressed Teen With Carvell Wallace

On this bonus episode from our friends at Slate's How To! podcast: As Kate’s teenage son, Sam, approached college she noticed him withdrawing. He wasn’t excited about his future and started to show symptoms of major depression. It came to a crisis point one summer night before Sam was set to leave for school. In the weeks and months that followed, Sam struggled to navigate the mental health system in search of care. And Kate? Kate was left wondering how she could help her son without being overbearing. On this episode of How To!, guest host [Carvell Wallace] (https://www.carvellwallace.com/) brings on Dr. Christine Moutier, psychiatrist and the chief medical officer for the [American Foundation for Suicide Prevention] (https://afsp.org/) . She advises Kate and all of us on how to be appropriately supportive, especially when things get to a scary place. Does the Spirit Of the Game Matter?

On this episode: Elizabeth, Jamilah, and Zak are joined by author and editor, [Travis Nichols] (https://slate.com/author/travis-nichols) . He wrote a [wonderful piece for Slate] (https://slate.com/human-interest/2022/10/little-league-when-a-player-just-wont-swing.html) all about his son’s strategic, unique approach to youth baseball. He figured out that if he doesn’t swing at pitches, he’s more likely to get on base. It was incredibly effective… but not in the spirit of the game. What’s a parent to do in that situation?  Recommendations:  Travis recommends voting in the [Georgia runoff election] (https://georgia.gov/election-2022) .  Zak recommends finding some long, thermal underwear. On this episode: Elizabeth, Zak, and Dan debate what to do about a dad who threw a half-eaten bite of burger at his preteen. The fight started because his daughter protested that he took too big of a bite from her burger. Our letter writer is concerned that this spat is just another instance of his anger escalating. How To!: Pick a College (And Actually Afford It)

On this bonus episode from our friends at Slate's How To! podcast: College application season is approaching fast—too fast—for 16-yr old Maya and her mother, Melissa. The problem? Maya has no idea where to go or what to study. It doesn’t help that there are thousands of schools to choose from, and little transparency about their true cost. On this episode of How To!, we bring on [Ron Lieber] (https://www.nytimes.com/by/ron-lieber) , New York Times [money columnist] (https://www.nytimes.com/column/your-money) and author of [The Price You Pay for College] (https://ronlieber.com/books/the-price-you-pay-for-college/) . He shows Maya how to narrow down the list of potential colleges by asking insightful questions of the schools and, ultimately, yourself. Then he talks to Melissa about how to pay for it without harming the rest of the family’s finances.  Ron’s questions for parents:  1--What do you remember your parent or parents saying to you the first time they talked about what college would cost and what, if anything, they would pay? 2--Or if there was silence around the topic of paying for college, what did it speak? 3--How much was your parent or your parents willing to pay for your education? How did you feel about that?  4--If your parents paid your way, is it possible that you should not feel obligated to do the same, given how much the world has changed? 5--And if your parents paid nothing, have you asked yourself whether 15 years of extreme thrift starting now (or going deep into debt 15 years from now to pay for your child’s first-choice college) may not erase whatever pain lingers from that period long ago -- or may create new conflict with your spouse and kids? 6--How much might you be willing to borrow -- or delay repayment of your own student loans? 7--How long are you willing to delay retirement to meet this goal? The Uniform Crisis

On this episode: Jamilah and Zak answer a question from a Marine whose son is a freshman at a school for Junior ROTC. The teen loves a lot of aspects of JROTC but loathes uniform day. It causes him anxiety and he’s mentioned quitting the school over the uniform. But most concerningly, the son has mentioned to his parent that he thinks about “unaliving” himself.  As a content warning, we do talk about suicide ideation in this episode.
