69: Paul will Autor werden | Paul wants to become an author

Make a decision based on simple job descriptions & sum-up: all dative and accusative prepositions and their contractions. Paul discovers for himself that he wants to be an author. So today he plans to write 20 applications and tell his mother about it. But the chances to become an author are slim, because he doesn't have a degree in German Studies and there are many authors already. In the Whatsapp group, he finds out that Anna and Meili don't have any news about Fritz. And Tim has no cell phone reception. Will Tim have any updates about Fritz when he can be reached by phone? Will Paul get a job? Transcript, lesson and extras: german-stories.com/69-paul-will-autor-werden-german-dative-accusative-prepositions The best way to learn German: Don't beat yourself up with too many new words When writing a learning story it's easy to get carried away by an idea for a dialog. But that can result in an episode having way too many new words. That would be demotivating for you, the learner. 68: Horror-Crash auf Oktoberfest! | Horror crash at Oktoberfest!

Understand an article in a tabloid newspaper & fusion of prepositions and articles: am, beim, im, vom, zum, zur, ins. Paul checks the Whatsapp group to learn about Fritz. He thinks Meili might find something on Fritz' Facebook. He reads on a news app about an accident at the Oktoberfest. A lot of police are needed there. Laura explains that that's the reason why she has no time during the next few days. Fortunately, she's not ghosting him again. His mom invites him for coffee to discuss his "career plans," so he decides to figure them out first. Will Paul's parents find out that he has no career plans at all? It was her present for Pauls birthday which she had angrily slammed on the table at the buffet in Berlin. He wants to do "something with writing, texts and words". He starts enthusiastically, but quickly gives up because he thinks you can't make any money with that. Then he writes Laura. She briefly answers that she won’t have time for him in the near future. 66: Der Freund, den Paul sucht | The friend that Paul is looking for

Talk about social problem areas and career choices, tip the waitress & subordinate clause with accusative (der Mann, den ich sehe). Paul is out with Laura when she tells him that Fritz always dreamed of owning a holiday home by the beach, maybe on the North Sea or Baltic Sea. Laura asks about Paul's job. Since he's jobless, he lies, saying he's a librarian but looking for something new. Laura is disappointed because Paul doesn't have a clear job goal. So now Paul really wants to find a job. He puts the big puzzle together: Fritz must be at a beachside holiday home with a garage and garden. And Paul’s missing book is surely also there. It turns out, by capturing the Großkauf thieves, Fritz got a promotion, money, and a vacation. Can Paul finally change his aimlessness? And where exactly is this holiday home? He starts talking about books that were banned in the GDR, former East Germany. That's when he remembers THE book. Paul lies again: he says the book is at home. 64: Opa wollte weg aus der DDR | Grandpa wanted to leave the GDR

Explain economics and politics in very simple words & temporal prepositions: ab; von ... bis; zwischen. Everyone thinks that the sticker on Fritz's garage door opener is in the shape of a lake. Therefore, Paul looks for it on the internet. But he cannot find such a lake in all of Germany. He thinks there is little hope because Fritz is certainly abroad. Laura writes: She saw Paul's Oktoberfest photos on Whatsapp and she also wants to go there with him. Grandpa talks about his time in the GDR. At first, Paul is fascinated by the GDR, but then he hears about the Stasi. He can barely prevent Grandpa from remembering the book. Will Grandpa remember asking him about the book, or is Paul lucky? 63: Das Oktoberfest | The Oktoberfest

Tell a story about the past, make conclusions & temporal prepositions: vor, nach, seit. Paul's mom feels guilty because he got fired and so she transferred € 500 to his account. He pretends to know what kind of job he wants and says he'll tell her next time. So he is spared from having to tell his friends that they have to pay themselves, even though he said „it’s my treat“. He meets them at the Oktoberfest. It turns out that Fritz had a girlfriend the whole time. On the trip to Berlin he has always been on the phone and he also mentioned a garden. But Fritz's apartment doesn’t have a garden! Paul shows the garage door opener with the broken sticker to his friends. Tim says it might not be broken. The form of the sticker could represent a lake. Grandpa calls and Paul promises to visit him tomorrow. And he wonders if Laura was just being polite on their date because she hasn't answered him yet. Will grandpa want to see the book tomorrow? Is Laura ghosting him again? Will his parents find out he lied because he doesn't actually know what job he wants? What garden was Fritz talking about? Does the symbol on the garage door opener represent a lake? Emphasize the negative aspects of a person, make a friendly suggestion & Substituite forms for the imperative: Nicht so viel trinken! / Lass uns das nehmen! Paul writes his mother that he wants to borrow 500 € from her. He lies and says it’s for new clothes for a job interview - not for treating his friends to the Oktoberfest directly after a shopping frenzy. And he pretends to know what kind of job he wants. Tim thanks Paul for helping him meet Meili at the Oktoberfest. Paul meets Laura for the first time. She's nice, they flirt, and she says that Fritz has always been overeager about his career. Make suggestions and give commands & Imperative with Sie: kommen Sie / suggestion with wir: gehen wir. Paul is buying new clothes to be prepared in case he is invited to a job interview. He doesn't have a lot of money, so he doesn't want to buy much. But he gets too excited and ends up on a shopping frenzy. Meili is happy because her problems are gone. That makes Tim and Anna happy, too. Paul takes the opportunity to invite all of them to the Oktoberfest. But due to his shopping frenzy, his bank account is now in the red. Why? They speak natural German. But we put in countless hours of work to direct every voice actor so that he or she speaks a bit slower and more clearly, adapted to the language level. You can always speed up the audio in the app. We believe this is the better way. Just as we believe that at the beginning, training wheels teach a child to ride a bike better than bruises from falls do. 59: Geh ins Wohnzimmer und iss! | Go into the living room and eat!

Give commands and instructions & imperative with du: sei / iss / sag / antworte / öffne / fahr / geh. Paul writes Anna to ask her for some clothing store recommendations and learns about Meili's problems. Then he visits his parents for coffee and cake. Now they are very friendly to him because they have a guilty conscience: Paul has lost his job which is partly their fault. And Laura writes him that she is Fritz's ex-girlfriend. Paul thinks that's good because then she'll have information about him. But she surely thinks that Paul has a problem with it. So his plan to get a date with her is at risk. He needs to find a way to say he doesn't like Fritz anymore without getting into talking about problems a lot - it's far too early for that. Paul’s father brags about his important friends, including the head of the university. That’s when he gets an idea how his parents can help him, and they are very interested to hear about it. How can his parents help? What should he write back to Laura? Analyze your social circle, express solutions for problems & dative and prepositions: mit dem Garagenöffner / nach dem Fußballspiel and n-declension in the dative. Anna and Tim aren't mad at Paul anymore. But Meili still is. And Fritz is gone. Paul has to get Meili to forgive him. Only then can he invite all of his friends to the Oktoberfest, restore the old friendship and help Tim go on a date with her. Paul is unemployed, and he doesn't have good clothes for a job interview. So he asks Meili about clothing shops. Laura has been acting very strange, but she could have information about Fritz. She is the only source that’s left now. He has to ask her, but not in the chat. He needs to do it casually on a date. Grandpa could remember the book at any time. Paul has to date Laura immediately to find the book quickly. Laura writes that there is something she needs to tell him. Meili answers that she can't help because she has „other worries“. What is it that Laura needs to tell Paul? What worries does Meili have? 56: Müller schießt aus der Ecke | Müller shoots from the corner

Talk about football (soccer), make arrangements & dative and prepositions: aus der Ecke / bei dem Foul. Paul and Tim were at a football (soccer) game - Paul had invited him and paid for the tickets. As a thank you, Tim calls Fritz's landlord and pretends to be Fritz: He wants to get him to arrange for the garage door to be repaired, so that Paul can sniff around inside. But it turns out that the door and the opener are both new and cannot be broken at all. That means, Fritz has another garage and the opener must be for that garage. Tim is interested in Meili. He asks if Paul could arrange a meeting. Paul pretends that this is not a problem - but in reality it is because she is still mad at him. He reads Laura's many response messages: She writes to him because it was not okay of her to have ghosted him like that. Paul agrees with her. How can Paul arrange a meeting with Meili? 55: Alle Männer sind gleich! | All men are the same!

Internet related words & dative with plural and indefinite articles: einem Mann / keiner Frau. Paul is sitting in bed with his laptop, researching surf spots in Germany. Unfortunately, there are far too many of them. He needs more information before he can go on with his search. He finds Laura's e-mail in the spam folder: She saw him yesterday and thinks he has a wife and a child. That’s because he helped his neighbor carry her shopping bags. Paul stays calm and gives her his Whatsapp number. She explains that she deleted her profile because the Finder app is stupid. And she actually wanted to get in touch with him by e-mail. But then she saw on Facebook that he is a friend of Fritz's. She says Fritz is boring and probably only has boring friends (Paul). Then she annoys him even more by bombarding him with messages. Paul doesn't feel like answering any more. But an idea occurs to him regarding the problem with Fritz's landlord and garage door repairs. What is Paul's idea? 54: Ich schreibe dem Vermieter | I write the landlord

Address related words for sending letters & the dative case (dem, der, dem). Paul is near his apartment and opens Fritz's letter. It's two weeks old and it has the cell phone number of Fritz's landlord. Paul wants to call him and have the garage door repaired in Fritz's name. That way, he'll be able to open it afterwards, and sniff around inside. His problem: He doesn't sound like Fritz. He meets his neighbor and helps her carry her shopping bags. On his cell phone, he receives a push notification for an e-mail that his former online date Laura wrote to him. He can only read "You idiot!" on the home screen. Of course, he wants to know more, but he can't find the actual e-mail in the app. Where is Laura's e-mail? What is the reason for her long silence? Why is she, too, now saying that Paul is an idiot? 52: Hast du dich verletzt? | Did you hurt yourself?

Tell a story, talk about an accident & perfect tense with separable and reflexive verbs. Anna has to empty her basement by herself. Her landlord puts pressure on her, but doesn't help. She drops a box because her shoulder hurts again. That's when Paul arrives. She reluctantly accepts his help. He gives her painkillers, and together they retell their bike accident story where she injured her shoulder. Later, she even shares an idea with him: He should go to Fritz's apartment and sniff around there. Previously, Paul hadn’t been sure why he should go there since Fritz is not even there. But now he gets enthusiastic about the idea pretty quickly. What will Paul be able to find out at Fritz's apartment? 51: Das Lager ist nicht schlecht gewesen | The camp hasn’t been bad

Describe your situation in the past & perfect tense: wir sind gewesen / gelandet. Paul is still with Grandpa while Meili is sending a link from Fritz's Facebook page. Fritz was promoted because he caught the Großkauf thieves. That must be the reason why he is now the new head of the theft department. Anna writes that she has to empty her basement. She has a deadline, but a friend who wanted to help her just didn't show up. Even though nobody else can step in she still refuses Paul's help. Grandpa talks about „landing“ his plane in a forest and being a prisoner of war. Paul remembers Anna's shoulder is injured. She cannot carry anything. Grandpa advises him to quickly go help Anna. So he fortunately doesn’t remember to ask Paul about the book. Where are Fritz and the book? Why did he keep his promotion a secret? Talk about former times and history & perfect tense: er hat gesehen / vergessen. Paul visits Grandpa. And he asks his friends in the group chat about Fritz. But he kept everything as a secret. So they don't know anything. And they are still angry at Paul. It seems it’s Fritz who has the book. Paul cannot confess to Grandpa that it’s gone because he is the last person Paul still has. Grandpa almost remembers the book, but Paul distracts him by asking him about the past: As a child, Grandpa thought playing war was great, but later not so much, because he only survived the real war by luck. Paul is also looking for Fritz's vacation posts on Facebook. With the help of the group, he finds out that Fritz blocked everyone from seeing them - except for Meili. 47: Nehmen Sie das mit! | Take that with you!

Restructure the workforce & separable verbs & sentence structure. Paul is getting fired. He wasn’t aware that he didn’t report his illness to his boss. Instead, he accidentally sent the message to his dad - who didn't warn him of his mistake. So he was absent without notice. He clears his desk and calls Grandpa who says there is something Paul doesn't know yet about the book. He should bring it with him tomorrow. That way Grandpa can explain it. Paul is not sure if he should really confess that he lost the book. He hopes that Grandpa will forget this by tomorrow. Why didn't Paul’s Father warn him? What does Grandpa want to tell him about the book? Will he confess that he lost it? 46: Ich brauch’ Obst, Gemüse und Fleisch | I need fruit, vegetables, and meat

Grocery shopping, measurements, weight & sentence structure, subordinate clause. Paul is sick. He’s doing his grocery shopping in the supermarket. After that, he wants to go home, take sleeping pills, and write a message to his boss about his sick leave. Things are not going well at work at the moment. He should work more and play less detective. So he wants to give up trying to find his lost book by himself and go to the police instead. And he wants to call Grandpa tomorrow. He thinks whether he should tell him that the book was stolen. Will Paul really confess to Grandpa that he lost the book, and break his heart in doing so? So it is unknown if the book was thrown down from the balcony. Paul's friends are all angry, but he is able to make them understand his situation a bit. 44: Warum habe ich diese Idee erst jetzt? | Why do I only have this idea now?

Describe how things played out, and reasons for it & adjective declensions in the accusative: den großen Busch / einen großen Busch / großen Busch. Paul celebrates his birthday alone at home. He has no more friends. Now Fritz is mad at him, too, because he told Anna that he knows about her criminal record. He could have only got that information from a police officer like Fritz. He has an idea: Maybe someone threw the book out of the balcony at the party and picked it up from the bushes below afterwards? That way, the whole mystery is completely open again. Paul writes a message to the caretaker: Are there security cameras outside? He starts to feel ill. Was the book thrown down from the balcony? Who has it? Are there also security cameras outside? 43: Du wolltest mein Buch verkaufen! | You wanted to sell my book!

German dinner foods, bring up and disarm arguments & adjective declensions: eine internationale Stadt / ein grüner Tee / ein leckeres Bier / schöne Ecken. Scandal at the dinner buffet! Paul confronts Anna. He followed her and thinks he saw her trying to sell his book. And she was seen on the surveillance video with her bag. He also mentions her criminal record for theft. Anna is outraged. She was just trying to find a present for Paul’s birthday which he completely forgot. That's why she was looking for her old job hunting book at home. She put that big book in her handbag - that's why it wouldn’t close. She brought it to Berlin to show it to a book seller so that she can buy Paul the same book as a brand new edition. Taking a long time to find the book in her apartment was the reason she was late at the train station in Munich. Not because of a broken bicycle. Also, her cell phone was not empty. She just didn't have time to answer it. Anna's gift is just as big as Paul’s lost book. She says: “This is the same bag as at the party. Your gift doesn't quite fit into the handbag. So THE book doesn't fit either, you idiot!“ She slams the new job hunting book she bought for Paul on the table and walks away. If his lost book had been in her bag, he would have seen it sticking out in the surveillance video. He realizes, Fritz is also innocent - his bag has the same size as Anna’s bag. Paul mentioned Anna's criminal record. That was against his promise which he made to Fritz earlier. Only police officers can get such information. Will Fritz be angry about this? Talk about points of interest, locations, means of transport & the accusative case (den, einen, keinen). In Berlin, Anna, Fritz and Paul want to go to the Brandenburg Gate. Fritz warns them about pickpockets because Anna's handbag won't close. Something square, wrapped in a carrier bag is sticking out. Fritz's mobile phone rings again, and he walks away so that they can’t hear what he’s talking. That’s when Anna wants to go to a shop for a moment. Paul takes the opportunity to secretly follow her. But it's very difficult to fit your writing into a well structured teaching plan, so that the student doesn't have too much trouble learning German. We did it the hard way. Hard for us, easy for you: German Stories starts from zero, and leads you to your goal in small steps. Luckily there's only a little bit of grammar per episode for you to learn.
