BEST OF (#44 OF 577) THE MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF EDGAR ALLAN POE

"the Mysterious Death of Edgar Allen Poe"-On September 7, 1849, Edgar Allen Poe, at the top of his career, kissed his fiance goodbye at his home in Richmond, VA, and began a business trip to Philadelphia. He then dropped out of sight for a week, he was found in Baltimore on October 3rd, inside a bar-turned-polling place, drunk and disheveled, wearing clothes that did not fit him, and unable to speak clearly. He was rushed to a hospital, where he lingered on the edge of insanity for nearly one week, before dying. Theories as to the cause of his death have abounded for decades. His doctor had ordered him not to drink, fearing that a lesion close to his brain could lead to his death. Others suggested he was forced to drink alcohol at the polling place and was a victim of "cooping", by which innocent bystanders were grabbed off the street and forced to drink, then vote multiple times. Still others suspect a variety of causes, from murder to rabies. Even more mysterious is the fact that until recently, and for 80 years, a cloaked man was seen visiting the original grave of Poe every year on the same date, where he would leave three roses and a half drunk bottle of cognac behind. Will he come back next year? Credits: Monica Gil performs Annabel Lee (YouTube) Christopher Lee performs "The Raven" WBAL-TV Baltimore News Report on "the Poe Toaster" Learn more about your ad choices. THE MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE OF AMBROSE BIERCE

In December of 1914,71 year-old decorated CivilWar Major, accomplished journalist, and famous author Ambrose Bierce wrote his Niece and his secretary to tell them he was going to Mexico to cover the Mexican insurrection led by Pancho Villa and others. He felt likely thathis fate would be probably be that of being lined up against a wall and shot- as these insurrectionists were quick-tempered killers. Not long after, Bierce disappeared completely, and years of searches have not brought any concrete evidence of what happened to him- but the legend told by those who daid they saw him or knew of him in his last days tells the story very much like the one he envisioned. This is his story. ... Read more

BEST OF (#43 OF 576) THE MIRACLE AT COKEVILLE

On a sping day in 1986 two people walked into the Cokeville Elementary School in Cokeville Wyoming and held 154 children and adults hostage in a 50' X 50' room for 2 1/2 hours, claiming that this was a revolution, and that they wanted a ransom payment of $2 million dollars for every child in the room. They entered the building with a gas bomb capable of blowing the side of building out easily if it were detonated. The wife of this crazed husband wife team accidentally triggered the bomb in the crowded room. Shrapnel from the blast peppered the walls but miraculously, only one of the four explosive devices ignited despite the gas flames that shot the woman across the room, and most of the blast went straight up through the ceiling. Other than the man and wife, who died, not another person was killed, although one was shot and many were burned. Some said it was an incredible piece of luck. But as the children's stories began to come out in the days and weeks that followed- their lives were saved by much more than luck. Their story follows- Trailer for TC Christensons “the Cokeville Miracle” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLwaKDaW5ZY Interviews with students and parents; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pj9j6L694X4 Book: the CokeVille Miracle: When Angels Intervene by Hartt and Judene Wixom ; https://www.amazon.com/Cokeville-Miracle-When-Angels-Intervene/dp/1462117619/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1542396721&sr=8-1&keywords=cokeville+miracle+book Armstrong, Jamie. THE LIBERTY BELL WILL RING AGAIN : THE INCREDIBLE TRUE STORY OF AMERICA'S ICONIC SYMBOL OF FREEDOM- ...

On July 4th, 2026, in fact, all that year, America's Liberty Bell and all its brothers and sisters in every state will be ringing out loud and clear to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. There are many stories surrounding the original Liberty Bell, its crack, and its many renditions both here and abroad, as well as how it is perceived with love and respect by most Americans. It was first given the name 'The Liberty Bell" by the abolishionist movement as they fought for their freedom, and the women's Liberty Bell, which they called the Justuce Bell, was there when they cheered the passage of the 19th amendment giving them the vote. It was there behind the head of Abraham Lincoln as he lay in an open casket on his final trip home. The story of the Liberty Bell is OUR story, and a big part of what makes America special. Check out our two new 1001 podcasts (1001True Crime From Another Time and 1001 Stories From The Gilded Age) wherever you listen topodcasts as well as at our new website www.bestof1001stories.com. BEST OF (#42 OF 515) THE AMBER ROOM ONE OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST UNSOLVED MYSTERIES

The Amber Room was an ornate chamber decorated in custom crafted amber panels backed with gold leaf and mirrors and located in the Catherine Palace in Tsarke Selo near St. Petersburg. It was a gift from Prussia to Russia in the 18th century in order to promote an alliance against Sweden. It was stolen from the palace by Nazi Germany in WWII and moved to Konigsberg Castle in Germany, where some say it was destroyed by either Soviet or RAF bombing raids which destroyed most of that city. Konigberg was annexed by Russia and is called Kaliningrad. today. Many theories exist regarding the fate of the Amber Room and we cover them here, as well as provide additional research on Swedish and Argentine financing of the Nazi war machine, the sinking of the Wilhelm Gusloff with nearly 9,000 refugees onboard (and possibly the Amber Room in crates), and German theft of many priceless pieces of art, some of which were recovered by the "Monuments Men", and others which are still missing. Get all of our shows at one website: www.1bestof1001stories.com SUPPORT OUR SHOW BY BECOMING A PATRON! www.patreon.com/1001storiesnetwork. Its time I started asking for support! MOMO, THE MONSTER THAT TIME FORGOT

For a few months back in the summer of 1972, a shaggy beast terrorized the tiny town of Louisiana Missouri, scaring the living bejezuz out of kids and adults and mystifying researchers. He had been spotted at a year previous but forgotten- passed off as a prank, but when he came back, he did so with a vengeance- killing at least one dog, and running one family out of their home. He left genuine three toed footprints, smelled like long dead meat, and had thick black hair covering his face and body. He was witnessed by dozens, He was also accompaniied by very strange lights and objects in the sky, Sometime after 1972, the beast called MoMo (for Missouri Monster) ,like Puff the Magic Dragon, slipped sadly back into his cave. But his legend survives as the monster that time forgot. ---Moran, Mark & Scheurman, Mark. Weird US Barnes & Noble Books. ---Place, Marian (1978). Bigfoot All Over the Country. THE TRUE STORY OF THE FIRST THANKSGIVING (BEST OF 1001)

In November of 1620 the Pilgrims arrived by ship to a new land filled with danger and uncertainty, a world in which nearly half of them would soon die of starvation and sickness, their final resting place being unmarked graves so as not to let the surrounding Indians know how many of their group had been lost. Yet with unshakable faith and strength of spirit, the survivors of that first winter set to work to fell trees and build a village, they found the strength to clear fields and plant crops when the springtime came, and they forged an alliance with the Wampanoag Indians for their mutual benefits. Then, despite that first year of incredible hardship and loss, they set aside a few days in the fall of 1621 to give thanks to their God for all the blessings they had received. This was the first Thanksgiving at Plymouth in what we now call Massachusetts. This is their story.. Join us as we take a look back at the first Thanksgiving in Plymouth back in 1621. If you have a minute, visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/1001Heroes and answer our question "Despite this hard year-what are you most thankful for this Thanksgiving? BEST OF (#38 OF 510) UNSUNG HEROES OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION (PT I): WASHINGTON'S SPIES

Unsung Heroes of the American Revolution (Pt 1): The Culper Spy Ring, Nathan Hale, and others: Few people leaving the Banana Republic Store at 66th and 3rd st Manhattan, NY, stop to notice the plaque on the outside wall that mentions the spot less than 100 yards away where courageous young Nathan Hale spoke his famous last words “I regret that have but one life to give for my country’- before being hung from a tree by his British captors. And many probably have no idea how and why those words stirred General Washington’s heart so profoundly when he heard them. And Lady Gaga probably had no idea that her Rivington Street Rebels derived their name from Washington’s greatest spy- James Rivington- or the Beastie Boys, for that matter, when they chose a picture of Manhattan’s Rivington Street for the cover of their album ,Paul’s Boutique. Or the people leaving the Burger King at the intersection of Gregory Ave. and River Dr. in Passaic NJ who drop trash near the forlorn historical marker located on a small concrete pad right there near a utility pole in the parking lot…the sign that just begins to note the incredible accomplishments of a one-time British Lord, William Alexander –better known , and loved, by his Continental Troops as Lord Sterling. Although it says much more, these few words say it all: “American Patriot, Friend of George Washington”. The American Revolution stretched for eight years, from 1775 to 1783, during which time Commander in Chief George Washington had to depend on his network of spies and most trusted soldiers to stay one step ahead of the noose. The AMC series TURN, based on Alexander Rose's book "Washington's Spies", gives a highly fictionalized account of the actions of Washington's greatest spy ring- The Culper Ring. This is the real story of the courageous men and women who risked and sometimes suffered hanging, beginning with Nathan Hale. While Part I focusses mainly on the Culper Spy Ring,, Part Two will provide many rarely told stories about the unsung heroes who risked everything for the cause of liberty, including the slave spy James Armistead Lafayette, Margaret Corbin, Molly Pitcher, Francis Marion , aka The Swamp Fox, and many others. George Washington's Secret Six: The Spy Ring That Saved the American Revolution (New York: Penguin, 2013), 105-108. AMERICAN SCARY: A HISTORY OF HORROR FROM SALEM TO STEPHEN KING AND BEYOND

In this very enjoyable intervoiew with author Jeremy Dauber we discuss his new blockbuster book American Scary , which is a sweeping and entertaining narrative that details the rise and enduring grip of horror on American culture from the taught, terrifying stories of Edgar Allan Poe to the sharply chilling folms of Jordan Peele. Along the way we talk about Washington Irving, Arthur Machem. Alfred Hitchcock, the movie 'The Blob', Uncle Tom's Cabin, Frankenstein, and much more, but we probably only cover 1% of the contents of this terrific book, which is really a history of horror genre books and movies.
