Podcasting Has an Analytics Problem

Currently, if a podcaster wants to get the full picture of their show's growth, they need to look at multiple analytics reports: their hosting company, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and now YouTube. Then they need to correlate how all this data is presented, since it can be very different, depending on IAB Certification, downloads, listens, and more. And that's just the podcaster - then you have media and ad buyer data, too. So how do we bring all this convoluted data together, and where do podcast analytics need to improve to give that fuller picture? Join your host Danny Brown and guest co-host Dan Misener as they dive in to podcasting's analytics problem. Our guest co-host this week: Dan Misener Dan Misener is co-founder of Bumper, a podcast growth agency. Prior to co-founding Bumper, Dan served as Director of Audience Development at Pacific Content. Prior to that, he spent a decade working in public radio at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), both on-air and behind-the-scenes. He was involved in the CBC's earliest podcasting efforts, and served as producer on many national and local news and current affairs programs. Which Podcast Hosting Company is For Sale? Plus... Good or Bad for the Industry?

In the June 3 edition of industry publication Podnews, editor James Cridland reported on the rumour of "a large podcast hosting company having an all-hands meeting with the news that they'd found a buyer for the company." There's also industry rumours of at least three hosting companies either looking for buyers or open to buyer approaches. We've seen podcast hosting companies either close or be acquired before: Spotify bought Anchor and Megaphone, and Global acquired Captivate, as some examples. So with the rumour mill around more acquisitions currently red-hot, does this mean podcast hosting is in a boom & bust period? Or is it just a sign of a medium continuing to mature and take advantage of good opportunities? At the end of March this year, industry publication Podnews published its annual Podnews Report Card. This asks podcasters to complete a scorecard on podcast platforms, and where they're doing well, and where they're doing not so well. Across the board, all main platforms - Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and Amazon Music - had a lower score than last year when it came to helping listeners discover and follow a podcast.
