The podcast isn't simply a platform for conversation; it's a growing rebellion against the outdated notions of what it means to be over 60. This tradition instilled in Karen a deep appreciation for homemade cakes, scones, and tarts, fueling her ever-growing collection of cookery books. Before embracing baking professionally, Karen led a life filled with diverse experiences. She worked in a bank, but seeking adventure, she left her job, sold her house, and moved to Greece for a year, where she undertook various jobs, including working as a gamekeeper’s assistant on a private island. Upon returning to Wakefield, she became a mother to two daughters, a journey that further ignited her passion for cooking, particularly outdoor cooking during family camping trips in France. Karen's baking skills were self-taught, driven by a desire to provide a varied and nutritious diet for her children. Her commitment to mastering the art of baking led her to set herself weekly challenges to learn new techniques, a journey that culminated in her becoming one of the final 12 bakers in the 2018 edition of a notable baking competition. Planning For Financial Freedom Over 60 with Diane Watson

Hello, it's Siobhan Daniels here, your host at the "Retirement Rebel" podcast. In the introduction of our latest episode, I delve into three key subjects that are close to my heart and central to our theme of redefining retirement. Firstly, I discuss the financial realities and challenges many women face as they approach retirement. It's crucial we acknowledge that for many, there's a significant shift in financial stability when transitioning from a regular income to a pension. I want to bring to light how this can impact the ability to leave undesirable situations, especially for those who may not fully understand their finances or legal rights to assets. With the financial independence of women at its core, the conversation is geared towards equipping our listeners with the knowledge and confidence to take charge of their financial future. Secondly, we talk about the concept of home ownership and how it's deeply ingrained in the UK psyche as a financial asset. However, owning a home comes with its own set of burdens, like maintenance costs. I want to help our audience think outside the traditional box of financial security, exploring the idea of alternative lifestyles like the one I've chosen—a mobile life on the road—which challenges conventional living and financial arrangements. Lastly, we cover the broader topic of empowerment through financial education. I truly believe knowledge is power, and it's essential to teach not only our children but also ourselves about managing finances wisely. By sharing relatable and engaging stories instead of dry, numbers-focused lessons, I hope to inspire our listeners to become financially savvy and make informed decisions about their assets and future earnings. Throughout these conversations, my goal is to stir a rebellion against the usual retirement expectations and encourage listeners, especially women, to embrace life after sixty with independence, joy, and a fair bit of financial nous. Stay tuned as we dive deeper into these subjects and more on the "Retirement Rebel" podcast. Don’t forget to follow / subscribe to the podcast for FREE on your podcast app of choice, or play it directly from the website: [www.retirementrebel.co.uk] (http://www.retirementrebel.co.uk) Key Points: Introduction to the Episode 00:00 - 02:00 Host Siobhan Daniels introduces the episode by setting the stage for a discussion with Diane Watson about rethinking traditional financial norms and considering alternative lifestyles in retirement. They provide a brief overview of what to expect from the conversation including stories and insights on financial empowerment and retirement planning. Rethinking Financial Perceptions in Retirement 02:01 - 06:45 The conversation begins with a look at how retired people often experience a change in their financial situation, leading to more mindfulness about their expenditures, and busts common myths about feeling financially secure solely based on home ownership and traditional retirement plans. Tackling Gender Inequality in Finance 06:46 - 11:30 The discussion turns to the financial challenges faced by women, particularly those in their fifties and sixties. Diane Watson imparts important information on entitlement and legal rights following divorce, stirring awareness that cohabitation doesn’t offer the same security as marriage. Financial Literacy and Education 11:31 - 17:15 Siobhan and Diane delve into the importance of financial education for children and adults alike, emphasising the relevance of stories in teaching complicated financial concepts. Disrupting Traditional Living for Financial Freedom 17:16 - 23:00 Siobhan shares her own story of eschewing conventional residential and financial arrangements for a more mobile and flexible lifestyle. They explore the financial burdens of maintaining a home and discuss how home ownership is not necessarily the financial asset it was once considered to be. Ageism and the Power of Community 23:01 - 29:00 The episode takes a turn into the social implications of retirement, discussing how ageism affects perceptions and lifestyles. Siobhan and Diane encourage building communities to empower women to live vibrantly at any age, challenging the stereotypes associated with being a 65-year-old woman. Financial Independence and Empowerment 29:01 - 34:50 Diane emphasises the significance of women having their own financial independence and being proactive in their retirement planning. They uncover the psychological barriers to women's financial understanding and stress the importance of starting retirement savings early. The Ripple Effect of Financial Attitudes 34:51 - 39:20 The conversation circles back to how parental attitudes toward money shape children's future financial behaviours, stressing the importance of teaching financial responsibility to the next generation. The Waspi Campaign and Retirement Realities 39:21 - 45:30 Recognizing the financial struggles many women face, Diane discusses the Waspi campaign's insights on state pension changes. They examine the impact of increasing retirement ages and the necessity of making financial provisions for retirement. Embracing a Retirement Rebel Lifestyle 45:31 - 50:00 The episode concludes with a dive into Siobhan and Diane's personal experiences as retirement rebels, exploring activities like cold water swimming and detailing how these experiences can enhance dopamine levels, promote well-being, and defy the typical narrative of ageing. Outro and Teaser for the Next Episode 50:01 - 52:00 Siobhan wraps up the episode by summarising the key points discussed and the overarching message of financial empowerment and redefined retirement. A teaser is provided for the next episode, promising more rebellious tales and insights from inspiring guests. So they have this innate fear that maths equals money equals finance." Fine Wine and Wrinkles: Honor Marks' Pro-Age Revolution

Hello, Rebels, it's your host, Siobhan Daniels, here to give you a peek into the heart of our latest episode. While I've always been a bit of a maverick, today's show hit home with three critical subjects that we absolutely needed to get into the open. Firstly, we grappled with the pervasive issue of anti-ageing messages that inundate our society. You know, the harmful narratives that suggest we should fight ageing tooth and nail, as if it's something to be defeated rather than embraced. Honor Marks and I share a strong sentiment against this attitude. We believe in flipping the script to a pro-age message that celebrates every candle on our birthday cake as a badge of honour, not shame. The second key topic we couldn't skirt around was the importance of authenticity in the ageing process. We got real about the beauty of getting older and laughed over our lines and wrinkles, which are, in truth, the rich narratives of our lives etched onto our faces. Rejecting the pressure to look younger through cosmetic procedures, Honor and I delved into the meaningfulness behind every silver strand and laugh line, empowering listeners to value their true selves over a facade. Lastly, Honor and I spoke passionately about championing a supportive platform for women transitioning from their 50s to 60s and beyond. We discussed how this significant life stage should be amplified and appreciated, not whispered about as if it's the beginning of an end. I shared my personal experiences and how I find immeasurable inspiration from other women who are redefining what it means to grow older, proving that age is not just a number but a treasure trove of wisdom, courage, and opportunity. So there we have it, Rebels – a trio of pivotal subjects setting the stage for an unmissable exploration of what it truly means to live life as a Retirement Rebel. Here's to celebrating the journey of ageing with reckless abandon and being an unapologetic trailblazer at every age. Don’t forget to follow / subscribe to the podcast for FREE on your podcast app of choice, or play it directly from the website: [www.retirementrebel.co.uk] (http://www.retirementrebel.co.uk) Key Points: 03:45 - "Pro-Age over Anti-Age": Honor Marks shares her stance on the negative connotations of 'anti-ageing' and discusses the urgency to spread a pro-age message. She articulates why she believes ageing should be celebrated rather than stigmatized. 07:30 - "A Call to Rebel": Siobhan speaks about the need for a rebellion against anti-ageing products and misinformed messages, particularly those targeting younger women, and urges listeners to join her in this campaign. 11:15 - "Challenging the Cold": The conversation shifts to the impact of mindset on life's experiences, using the metaphor of taking a dip in cold water as Honor praises Siobhan's willingness to tackle the challenge during their travels together. 14:50 - "The Fine Wine of Ageing": Honor and Siobhan delve into the positives of getting older, drawing a parallel between age and fine wine, and discussing how wrinkles are akin to life stories etched on one's skin. 19:20 - "Authentic Ageing": A discussion on the importance of authenticity in the ageing process, emphasizing the beauty found in living life to the fullest and rejecting artificial attempts to look younger. 23:00 - "Rebellion in Action": Honor shares her rebellious choice to give up her home and job to move to the south of France, highlighting the importance of genuine connections and the value of living authentically through changes. 27:35 - "Optimism at Nearly 60": Honor reflects on approaching 60 surrounded by positivity and how a strong mindset and self-belief can contribute to a fulfilling life. 31:10 - "The Persona Projected": Both host and guest share their ideas on the importance of projecting the persona of who you want to be and the role of embracing failure in the pursuit of success. 35:00 - "Connecting with Honor": The episode begins to wrap up with Honor sharing her social media details and encouraging listeners to connect with her through her websites and to join her at her retreats. 38:45 - "Real Talk: Embracing Life Challenges": Honor candidly discusses the challenges she faced, such as the struggles of emptying a motorhome toilet and overcoming the guilt associated with the task. 42:20 - "Fostering a Pro-Age Community": Siobhan segues into the wider implications of the episode's discussions, focusing on the importance of bringing women together to share their experiences and support the pro-age movement. 46:10 - "Inspiration for Transition": The fear and inspiration surrounding the transition from the 50s to the 60s is highlighted, as Siobhan shares the need for a platform showcasing the achievements of older women and pushing back against the favored media narrative centred on celebrities. 49:55 - "A Quest for Authentic Representation": The episode closes with a profound discussion on the importance of self-acceptance, the beauty of inner character over outward appearance, and an invitation for listeners to join Honor's retreats for deeper engagement. 54:30 - "Farewell and Next Step": Siobhan provides a teaser for the next episode, mentioning an upcoming conversation with financial expert Diane Watson, and encourages listeners to share their rebel stories, engage on social media, and support the Retirement Rebel community by sharing the podcast. Guest Info Honor Marks Founder of the Magical Midlife Membership helping women to feel inspired and refired. Based in the South of France where she owns and runs gites ( self catering holiday accommodation) has a reputation for organising fabulous women only solo holidays both in France and elsewhere and is passionate about helping women live their best lives. I've always felt that I haven't fulfilled my full potential. But for the first time in my life, I feel closer to it than ever." Simplifying Life Choices: "But it was my then husband who actually said honour, let's shake it up, let's go do something different. Let's not wait. Everyone talks about moving to the south of France or doing other things when they retire. He said let's not wait till then, let's live our lives now." Empathy and Personal Growth: "And I really believe that you haven't always walked in that person's shoes, necessarily, but by listening to their story, you might want to help somebody who's just about to walk in those shoes or has done. You can become a better friend, a better wife, a better girlfriend, a better mom, a better anything, a better partner, or just a better version of yourself by the stuff you learn." Catholic School Lessons to Catwalks: Annie Stirk’s Ageless Adventure

Catholic School Lessons to Catwalks: Annie Stirk’s Ageless Adventure Hey everyone, it’s Siobhan here, and I’ve just got to say, sitting down with Annie Stirk for our latest Retirement Rebel episode was just brilliant. Here are the three big things we chatted about right off the bat. First up, we tackled how important it is for us women in our 60s to really make some noise and shake things up. I mean, we’ve been around the block, you know? We’ve got so much to share and it’s about time everyone realises that we’re not just going to fade into the background. We’re here, we’re full of life, and we want the world to know it. Then we moved on to this whole idea of mixing it up with the younger crowd – intergenerational collaboration, they call it. It's like, we’ve got so much to learn from each other. I’m all for mixing and mingling with the young ones; it keeps us cool and gives them a taste of our hard-earned wisdom. It’s pretty clear that when we all come together, great things can happen. And, we couldn't not talk about our shared rebel vibes! That cheeky streak we both have, well, it’s partly thanks to our old convent school days. Let's just say the nuns did their best but look at us now, bending the rules of retirement and living life our way. We had a few laughs about how that nonconformist spirit has nudged us to carve out these incredible new adventures in our 60s and beyond. Honestly, it was one of those chats that leaves you buzzing, ready to stir things up and live life to the fullest. We're on this wild ride together, and who says it's got to slow down just because we're getting a bit older? Not us, that's for sure! Learning To Live A Brighter & Better Life with Suzi Grant

Hello, listeners, it’s Siobhan Daniels here, your host of the Retirement Rebel podcast. I hope you're all ready to dive into another episode where we challenge the typical conventions of ageing and retirement. Today, I have the pleasure of introducing you to a truly inspiring guest, [Suzi Grant] (https://www.alternativeageing.net/) , who embodies everything the Retirement Rebel stands for. In our conversation, Suzi and I explore three key subjects that resonate with so many of us who are navigating this wonderfully rebellious phase of our lives. The first topic we unwrap is the impact of health on our independence, particularly as it pertains to driving. Suzi bravely discusses her struggle with eye conditions and how they have influenced her ability to drive. It's a poignant example of the curveballs life throws at us, and how we handle them can define our older years. It's an important conversation because it touches on the heart of what many of us fear—losing our autonomy. But, as you'll hear, Suzi is all about finding alternative solutions and maintaining her zest for life regardless. Secondly, we recount our adventures in solo travel later in life. There's something truly liberating about heading off into the unknown on your own, and both Suzi and I have tales to tell on that front. We also get real about the fears and safety concerns that come with travelling solo, something I know a lot of you can relate to. But we also stress the importance of not letting those concerns diminish our desire to experience life fully. Suzi’s spirit and advice are truly inspirational for any woman considering a solo trip, no matter what age. Lastly, we delve into the importance of pursuing your passions and ignoring negative influences, especially as they pertain to age. Suzi, who became a trained nutritionist around her 50th birthday, exemplifies this wonderfully. We both agree – age should not be a barrier to living life passionately. It's why Suzi's dislike for labels such as 'middle-aged' or 'old' resonates with me so much, and I think it will with you too. It's about being seen and not overlooked, challenging those stereotypes, and inspiring others to do the same. Throughout this episode, Suzi offers her wisdom on how living by the sea in Brighton helped manifest her vibrancy, how we can embrace our quirkiness, and why it’s never too late to reinvent ourselves. There were only four of us because we were quite grown up and they are still very close friends. I mean, one of them is on my YouTube all the time and the other one lives in Bali, but we're still really good friends all these years later, growing old disgracefully together." Embracing Life Changes: "But when I came back very soon after that, I was writing. I think I'd done one book and I had another book deal with Penguin and I just sat and thought, why am I staying in London when I love the seaside and love living by the sea? Why on earth am I living here still wearing black, navy blue or beige every single day? And I moved to Brighton and that's when my whole life changed, because I wasn't on camera, so I could wear exactly what I like. I mean, I was always colourful." Finding Happiness in Simple Things: "please find your passion, lose your fear, don't listen to the negative minis or so, but what we call the negative and do what is going to make you happy." Age is Just a Number: Sarah Thornely's SUPer-Charged Victory

Hello, listeners, it’s Siobhan Daniels here, your host on the "Retirement Rebel" Podcast. In today’s episode, we dived into some deeply enriching and empowering subjects, all centred around embracing the beauty of ageing. Firstly, we explored the positive aspects of getting older. Beyond the number, ageing can be a release into freedom and honesty, as I've learned and as our magnificent guest Sarah Thornely echoed. It’s about living your life with a full, vibrant heart, and I must say, talking with Sarah only reinforced my belief that our 60s and beyond can be our most daring, fulfilling years yet. Sarah and I also brought to the table our experiences with travelling and the new adventures we’ve embarked upon in our wiser years. We compared notes on how we’ve both sought out journeys, opportunities, and yes, a bit of delightful mischief that our younger selves might have shied away from. Adventure doesn’t retire, and neither do we! Lastly, we discussed the concept of being a ‘retirement rebel’. I asked Sarah about her own rebellious streak, which, quite frankly, is as inspiring as it gets! We’re aligned in the belief that women, especially as we age, can and should break barriers, pursue passions, and fly in the face of what's expected. We find ourselves amidst a cultural shift where being rebellious isn't just for the young; it's a spirit that fuels our zest for life at any age. As we navigated through these themes in our introduction, my intention was to lay the groundwork for a thoughtful, provocative discussion. I wanted us to look at life beyond the expectations placed upon us by society and to find joy, create experiences, and truly live without the confines of our age as a limiting factor. Sarah’s spirit and her experiences are the epitome of what this podcast stands for, and I’m thrilled to think of the waves of inspiration that will stem from this conversation. Her work at SUPjunkie has been well-received by readers, particularly the SUPjunkie Reporting in SUPM segment, which provides monthly highlights of the GBSUP National Series Sarah Thornely's passion for SUP led her to establish SUPJunkie, where she covers both UK and international races through live feeds and reporting. Aging Gracefully: "It's always getting better, so why should I be worried about getting older?" Embracing Freedom Post-Divorce: "I just did everything probably that I had never done in my teenage years... I smoked, I drank, I did everything possible. Very quickly realised that none of that was for me, I guess I wasn't doing it on purpose, I just did it because it's like freedom. I suddenly had this freedom." Writing Wrongs: How Helen Garlick Owned Her Story and Encouraged Others to Do the Same

Today I want to share with you an overview of three key subjects we discussed during the introduction of our fantastic conversation with the ever-inspiring Helen Garlick. Firstly, we touched on the profound significance of happiness and kindness in our lives, particularly as we age. I find such joy in wrapping up in a blanket, gazing at the stars, and contemplating the universe; it's a simple yet profound happiness that I cherish deeply. Helen and I discussed how cultivating these feelings is not just about personal contentment; it's crucial for positive ageing. It's a reminder that our attitude and approach to life can significantly impact how we experience our later years. Secondly, we explored the importance of communication, connection, and a sense of community for personal empowerment. Helen eloquently highlighted how we create ripple effects through the ways we connect and communicate with others around us. It's through these bonds, whether they're with our peers or with younger generations – that we find strength and purpose. While acknowledging the utility of social media in fostering these connections, particularly for the older generation, Helen and I agreed wholeheartedly that there's nothing quite like real-life interactions for creating lasting and meaningful relationships. The third key subject we dove into was the delightful rebelliousness of liberal self-expression, like sober dancing. I shared my own trepidations about attending a party without the social crutch of alcohol, but how liberating and enjoyable the experience ultimately was. Helen recounted her own moments of sober revelry, painting a vivid picture of dancing freely, fully present in the moment—a stark contrast to the expectations one might have of typical 'retirement' behaviours. Don’t forget to follow / subscribe to the podcast for FREE on your podcast app of choice, or play it directly from the website: [www.retirementrebel.co.uk] (http://www.retirementrebel.co.uk) Key Points: 06:08 Travel, tragedy, disbelief, and freedom on horizon. 08:21 Man struggles, finds love, overcomes personal demons. 13:04 Connecting with women, ageing, and self-discovery. 14:19 Rejecting old standards, redefining beauty, embracing freedom. 18:23 Found identity after transformative nomadic journey. 22:59 Rock bottom after cancer surgery, refusing morphine. 26:34 Memoir encourages finding alternative life paths, inspiring generations. 27:48 Learning from others, living life truthfully. Inspire. 33:33 Enjoying dance without alcohol feels rebellious. 36:07 Reflect on open communication, find purpose in life. Guest Info Helen Garlick is a renowned speaker, trainer, author, and ambassador with over thirty years of experience in training lawyers, family practitioners, and individuals in various communication and conflict resolution skills. She specialises in collaborative law, negotiation skills, mediation, and wellbeing. Helen believes in the power of joyful learning and connection for effective personal development. She recently authored her debut memoir, "No Place to Lie," which has received excellent reviews. Additionally, she conducts writing retreats like "The Power of Owning Your Story," focusing on storytelling and self-reflection. Helen emphasises the importance of communication, heartfelt connection, and healing in her work. Through her writing, speaking engagements, and training courses, she aims to promote courage-building and vulnerability as pathways to reconnecting with oneself and others. Cold Water Therapy: Sara Barnes' Journey to Empowerment and Healing

Hello, and welcome back to "Retirement Rebel." This is your host, Siobhan Daniels, ready to dive into a truly inspiring episode. Now, usually, our introductions set the scene for what's to come, and today's no different. We've covered three pivotal topics that inform our conversation and, without a doubt, will resonate with many. Firstly, we broached the subject of physical and emotional rejuvenation through an activity as challenging yet reinvigorating as cold water swimming. Sara Barnes eloquently shares her voyage of discovery, having turned to the icy embrace of open waters after a surgery that tested her both physically and mentally. It's remarkable how embracing the chill of nature has not just been a path to recovery for Sara but a route to finding a community, a sense of self, and an enduring strength that defies expectations. The second key subject is the power of a supportive community. It's a recurring theme that I hold dear on this podcast. Sara's story underscores the importance of women lifting each other up—especially us women who are navigating midlife and beyond. The fact that Sara's book, "Cold Fix," is selling like hotcakes indicates that the message of unity and shared strength, particularly among those who might feel left out by society, is getting through. Lastly, we touch upon the idea of rewriting the script for our lives as we age. Whether it's overcoming ingrained fears or embarking on new adventures, we discuss how essential it is to trample those self-limiting beliefs and embrace a 'what's the worst that can happen' attitude. Sara embodies this rebellious spirit, not just in her day-to-day life but also through the empowering words she commits to the page. We both advocate for an outlook on ageing that is positive, proactive, and unapologetically spirited. These subjects aren't just idle chatter. They're profound insights offering a lens into the way we, as a community of rebels, approach the autumn of our lives—not as a time to wind down, but as a new chapter to embark upon with a gung ho spirit and a warrior’s heart. Let's carry these themes throughout our conversation today and see where they lead us. Let's continue to challenge ageism together, embracing every splash of cold water and every twist in our path as we share this rebel life. Don’t forget to follow or subscribe to the podcast for FREE on your podcast app of choice, or play it directly from the website: [www.retirementrebel.co.uk] (http://www.retirementrebel.co.uk) Key Points: 04:02 Sportive cycling events across rugged terrain, challenging fun. 09:23 Underestimated surgery recovery, needed help from family. 13:13 Understanding and overcoming feelings of darkness. 14:30 Kids organised a crucial, uplifting recovery picnic. 18:22 Discovering Instagram, global connections, and self-discovery. 22:07 Women's podcast promotes self-discovery and inspiration. 24:18 Agreement, action, and support for women's empowerment. 28:02 Middle-aged characters rediscover self-love through swimming. 33:13 Embracing ageing positively and sharing vibrant adventures. 33:56 Advice: Address physical limitations for active years. 39:44 Early rebel sneaks into backyard bathtub. Plasterer warned. 42:55 Discovering inner warrior, challenging ageism, enabling women. 43:56 Connect with us to keep the conversation. Guest Info Sara Barnes From cycling hundreds of miles in the mountains to being unable to walk more than a few steps without pain, I have learnt the hard way how to grow old actively. From the moment I first immersed in cold water following major leg surgery in February 2017 I felt it begin to heal me and unlock my creative and romantic spirit. I have wanted to be a published author since I had high tea with my Great Aunty Milly in Hove, Sussex and she pinned me down with her beady eyes and told me I would be a writer. Dreams do come true, even if you have to wait and keep trying for many years, like me. The Cold Fix, a narrative non fiction book was published when I was 60, then my debut novel, The Winter of Our Lives, when I was 61. Now, at the age of 62, although I'm not as mobile as I used to be I still have an adventurous spirit. My mantra is that you are never too old to follow your dreams, fall in love, skinny dip in a mountain stream or write another book. I swam with Simon Reeves in an episode of his The Lakes on BBC2 in 2022 and chatted on BBC Woman's Hour about my personal challenge of swimming with 60 different people in 60 different places in my 60th year. I've recently downsized and moved in a small town after 30 years of rural isolation. My dream is to buy a tiny piece of land in Scotland or France. It has to have a stupendous view, access to good water and room to park my campervan, Gloria. Finding Solace on the Water: A Tale of Paddleboarding and Positivity with Jo Moseley

Hello, my rebellious friends! I'm Siobhan Daniels, your guide and ally on this exhilarating journey we call "Retirement Rebel". In today’s episode, we're welcoming the incredible Jo Moseley, who, like many of us, has found her stride and voice in an age where society has often told us to slow down. Our introduction paved the way for three key subjects that both Jo and I hold close to our hearts. Firstly, we're addressing the transformative power of adversity. Life threw Jo more curveballs than most—a divorce, the responsibility of being a single mum, and the heartache of losing her parents. It’s in the throes of these struggles that she discovered the cathartic joy of paddleboarding, which didn't just offer her solace but became a cornerstone of her life story. We discuss how diving into such passions can act as a conduit for personal renaissance, something Jo demonstrates so beautifully. The second subject that both of us believe is essential is the rejection of society’s rather dated and, frankly, inaccurate perceptions of ageing. We refuse to accept that our latter years are just about decline. Jo speaks candidly about her adventures, her filmmaker and author pursuits, and even taking up skateboarding, approaching 60! She embodies the message that turning sixty is not the end of excitement but rather the start of new, daring chapters in our book of life. We both passionately advocate for a mindset where age is not a barrier but a badge of courage. And thirdly, we delve into the importance of support and community. Our shared ethos is to provide a platform for voices like ours to be heard—voices that have often been marginalised or silenced by misconceptions about what ageing women are capable of. Together, Jo and I aim to inspire, encourage, and sometimes gently nudge our listeners towards embracing their inner rebel and living life to its absolute fullest. So, buckle up, my friends. Ageing with Purpose: Embracing Wisdom and Power with Barbara Scully

Hello, retirement rebels! It's Siobhan Daniels here, your guide to redefining the narrative of ageing and embracing life beyond traditional retirement expectations. In today's episode, I had the pleasure of conversing with the inspiring Barbara Scully, a strong advocate for challenging ageist stereotypes and reshaping societal perceptions about women in their 60s and beyond. Together, we delved into three key subjects that lay at the heart of our discussion. Firstly, we explored the societal challenges faced by women in their late 50s and approaching 60, specifically in the workplace. We shed light on the undervaluation and voicelessness often experienced due to assumptions about retirement age and changing pension eligibility. Barbara shared powerful insights into the impact of ageism and sexism, touching upon the fear that women have of not being taken seriously if they choose to embrace their natural appearance, like letting their hair go grey. This led us into an engaging conversation about the importance of individual choice and not succumbing to societal pressures, especially when it comes to appearance and lifestyle decisions. The second key subject revolved around defying age-related stereotypes and celebrating the beauty of ageing. Barbara and I passionately discussed the significance of embracing one's age and making choices that align with personal preferences, reframing the narrative from one of limitation to one of liberation. We collectively expressed the belief that getting older can bring about freedom, confidence, and the opportunity to pursue long-postponed dreams, all while challenging the societal norms and beliefs that attempt to limit this stage of life. Finally, we delved into the courageous and rebellious spirit that ignites within us as we embrace life beyond traditional expectations. Barbara bravely shared her own experience of doing a stand-up comedy gig in Dublin, despite feeling terrified. We explored the transformative power of doing things that intimidate and scare us, ultimately finding fulfilment and growth in the process. So, retirement rebels, join me in celebrating individual choices, defying age-related stereotypes, and embracing the rebellious spirit within us as we journey through the later years of life. The stage is set for a vibrant conversation that challenges norms and celebrates the wisdom and power of older women. Stay tuned for the rest of this episode, where we delve deeper into the rich tapestry of Barbara's insights, experiences, and rebellious spirit. Remember, the rebel is within you! Guest Info Barbara Scully, a Dublin-based writer and broadcaster, has become a prominent voice in Ireland's media landscape. Her insightful opinion pieces and features are regularly published in Ireland's national press and magazines, and she's a familiar presence on both television and radio. Barbara's diverse 'Portfolio Career' evolved accidentally, with past roles including Public Relations and Fundraising Manager for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, a word-processing teacher, and a decade-long stint in the travel industry during the 80s. She also took a ten-year hiatus from her paid career to focus on family life, a period she recalls as blissful. Married to photographer Paul Sherwood, Barbara is a mother to three daughters and a grandmother to two. Her household in the Dublin suburb of Dun Laoghaire is bustling with a large bouncy dog, four cats, and even a resident fox in the garden. Barbara's daily essentials for a balanced life include good coffee (specifically a flat white), regular indulgence in large bubble baths, daily walks or cycle rides with her dog, frequent trips to West Cork, a stack of books for her reading pleasure, and gin (sans ice). But then, obviously, on top of that, general ageism, women then have the sexism, which actually gets worse very often as you get older." "I'm a huge believer in the power of older women. You will have gained wisdom in each of your decades of your life. Wisdom purely comes from our lived experience." "Social media gets a bad rap a lot of the times, but social media has helped women to get a voice." 'Retirement Rebel: Life After 60' is about going further and meeting incredible people who've also earned the title 'Retirement Rebel.' Together, we're challenging the stereotypes of ageing and retirement. What will we discover? Passions reignited in later life, struggles turned into triumphs, and the endless possibilities that come when you refuse to be defined by age.
