In this prescient interview, Savage speaks with Pat Buchanan about issues that would become increasingly important in the years that followed, including China's growing economic power, national security, foreign ownership of American assets, cybersecurity, trade deficits, manufacturing losses, immigration, and American sovereignty. Savage argued that the proposed 3Com deal involving Chinese telecommunications company Huawei should be blocked on national-security grounds, questioned Goldman Sachs' influence in Washington, and urged Americans to apply the kind of public pressure that helped stop the Dubai ports deal. They also discuss the consequences of NAFTA and America's trade deficit with Mexico, and the loss of U.S. manufacturing. They issue a warning about the border, demographic change, and immigration. They chastise the Bush-era embrace of globalization and question whether America was sacrificing its sovereignty.
