This episode of Real Life Real Crime is for Ruthie Cox Doré—a Lifer, a fierce advocate, a loyal friend, and a woman whose second chance became a life spent fighting for and helping others.Woody Overton remembers the Ruthie the Lifers knew, while sharing parts of her remarkable story that many never knew.Ruthie openly spoke about a past involving addiction, bad choices and ultimately eight and a half years of incarceration. But she didn't allow that chapter to define the rest of her life. Ruthie believed prison gave her the discipline and structure she needed to change her life, once describing it as the best thing God could have allowed her to face. While rebuilding her life, Ruthie pursued an education in horticulture and went on to earn an extraordinary collection of professional licenses and credentials. She turned that education into a career and successful landscaping business in Lafayette. But Ruthie's legacy reaches far beyond her professional accomplishments. She became extremely close to Stephanie Belgard and stood beside her during the fight for justice for her daughter, Courtney Coco, traveling from Lafayette to Alexandria and sitting in the courtroom throughout Courtney's trial. She became one of the most relentless advocates for #JusticeForHailey, developing a close relationship with Hailey's mother, Barbara Johnson, and refusing to stop asking questions or demanding answers. She also fought for people she believed had been wrongfully convicted, including Dwight Bergeron, whose case led to hours of conversations between Ruthie and Woody about justice, innocence and whether Woody would personally investigate his claims. And Ruthie showed up for individual Lifers, too. When another member of the community was gravely ill and desperately wanted to speak with Woody, Ruthie willingly gave up her own opportunity to talk with him so that person could have the call instead. In this deeply personal episode, Woody shares his own memories of Ruthie—the live shows and Crew Bashes she never missed, their long private conversations, their shared faith, her fierce personality, her advocacy, and the friendship that developed over the years.Even after Ruthie learned in May 2026 that she was facing aggressive cancer, she was already talking about the next RLRC Crew Bash. Her faith remained at the center of how she faced what was ahead:“God's got me.” Woody makes one promise in this episode: at the next Real Life Real Crime show, and every show that follows, there will be a chair onstage bearing Ruthie's name.Because Ruthie wasn't simply a listener. She was family. She was a Lifer to the end—and she's a Lifer forever. She took responsibility for the life she had lived, rebuilt it, became professionally successful and then spent years using her time, money, skills and voice to help other people. Her advocacy also wasn't limited to one kind of case. She fought beside victims' families, particularly Stephanie Belgard and Barbara Johnson, while also becoming deeply involved in a case where she believed a convicted person, Dwight Bergeron, was innocent. And the emotional center of the episode is Woody's relationship with Ruthie. This isn't simply a memorial biography. He's talking about someone he knew, loved, argued cases with, laughed with, prayed with and expected to see at every RLRC event. That's why I think “For Ruthie: A Lifer Forever” remains the strongest title. One other important part of the episode: Woody opens with an update on the ongoing #JusticeForMadison search and explains why the search of the Morris Road property is a painstaking, multi-day process involving grids, specialized equipment, ground-penetrating technology and ultimately physical searching. I would leave that out of the main title because Ruthie is unquestionably the heart of Episode 276, but it belongs in the episode's searchable keywords and context.
