When it flirted with activation in 2023, Claudia Sahm herself urged caution because of pandemic era distortions, but she also stressed that if it flipped cleanly, it meant the labor market was weaker than the glossy headlines implied. Fast forward, and the revisions now show that’s exactly what happened. In August 2024, BLS benchmark adjustments erased 818,000 jobs.

By February 2025, another 589,000 were gone. And just recently, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent flagged that another 800,000 could be stripped out. Add to that the steady drip of downward revisions through 2025, June flipping from a modest gain to a net job loss and the labor market has been overstated by somewhere between 2.3 and 2.4 million jobs since April 2023. Like i said in my previous post that kind of wholesale rewrite hasn’t happened since 2009, when the BLS had to admit it had massively overstated payrolls heading into the financial crisis. And history shows that these benchmark adjustments aren’t just statistical clean up.

They almost always surface at turning points, the stagflationary recession of the mid 1970s, the double dip downturn in the early 1980s, and the collapse of 2007-09. They’re usually evidence that the economy was already much weaker beneath the surface, and the headline strength was more illusion than fact. Which brings us back to the Sahm Rule. On the charts today, the indicator looks muted, sitting well below the 0.5 threshold. But that’s because the unemployment rate itself has been calculated off job counts that are now being revised down. If those missing millions of jobs had been reflected at the time, the unemployment rate would have been higher, the Sahm Rule would have ticked up, and the U.S. might already be shown as having tripped into recession

In other words, the Sahm Rule didn’t miss, the inputs did. Once the revisions are fully baked in, history may show it was flashing red in 2023 while policymakers insisted on labor resilience. That’s what makes this so consequential. For two years, the Fed leaned on the strong jobs market as its justification for keeping rates higher for longer. But if those jobs never really existed, then the Fed was tightening into fragility. That turns its high for longer stance into a policy error built on faulty data. Which is why the September 17, 2025 cut is unlikely to be a one off. As these revisions settle and the depth of labor weakness becomes impossible to deny, the Fed won’t just be trimming for optics. It will be forced into a broader pivot in 2026 acknowledging, belatedly, that the Sahm Rule was right all along.

Look, we’re not going to do economic policy off of one number. We believe that good policies are in place that are going to create good high high-paying jobs for the American people.

Two, let’s look at the efficacy of this number. August is the noisiest month of the year. Typically the highest provisions come in August, that’s why it’s important that we have good data. Austan Goolsbee, who is the head of the Chicago Fed, and probably the most partisan person at the Federal Reserve, in leadership, came out and said, “I don’t know if these numbers are that weak. I don’t know if I’m going to vote for a cut in September, because it may have something to do with the immigration, deportation.” So, this is why we need the data.

Three, if in fact, these numbers are true, it shows that President Trump was right about the Federal Reserve. They are too late. And because of the bad numbers, they likely would have been cutting in June, (if) we believe the numbers.

And four, I can tell you that the one thing this administration is not going to do, and we are not going to let the Democrat media surrogates do, is, during President Biden, (Vice) President Harris’s campaign, they told the American people it’s a vibe session. You don’t understand how good you have it. President Trump was elected for change. And we are going to push through with the economic policies that are going to set the economy right, I believe, by the fourth quarter. We are going to see a substantial acceleration.

The administration isn’t going to see one bad jobs report, point and shout “squirrel!” And then, suddenly change economic policy, presumably to something more that Democrats would favor. That may be what some administrations have done in the past, but not this one; Secretary Bessent seems confident that things will be turning around by the end of the year, and he is also clearly in favor of staying the administration’s current course

In July, California District Court Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong (a Biden appointee) issued a sweeping temporary restraining order (TRO), ruling that the enforcement actions taken by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were unconstitutional and imposing significant restrictions on the standards ICE agents could use to establish “reasonable suspicion” to stop and question suspected illegals. The administration appealed the district court order to the 9th Circuit, and, from there, filed an application for stay with the Supreme Court.

Letitia James’s New York State mortgage records indicate that she committed mortgage fraud on a $200,000 “Credit Line Mortgage” with Citizens Bank in 2021.

Like other mortgages, it requires a signed note, a mortgage document, and recording with the county clerk.
The mortgage document shows that James misrepresented her five-unit apartment building as a single-family dwelling.
This false claim allowed James to avoid significantly higher commercial loan closing costs and a higher interest rate.
In New York, the number of units in a property determines whether a loan qualifies as a residential mortgage with lower interest rates (1 to 4 family dwellings) or whether it’s a commercial/multifamily building mortgage with higher interest rates and closing costs (5 or more dwelling units). The official Certificate of Occupancy for Letitia James’s building at 296 Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn describes it as a “FIVE (5) FAMILY DWELLING.”

That designation is the one and only controlling legal authority for unit count.
Yet for two decades after buying the property in 2001, James refinanced multiple times while claiming the building had only four units.
This misrepresentation allowed James to qualify for lower residential interest rates she was not entitled to receive.
Even on her most recent refinancing on August 23, 2019, the mortgage document lists four units. On June 21, 2021, Letitia James signed the $200,000 Credit Line Mortgage with Citizens Bank for a 25-year term. On the first page of the agreement, under “PROPERTY DATA,” the Property Type is listed as “DWELLING ONLY—1 FAMILY.”
