1001 Heroes, Legends, Histories & Mysteries SHOW NOTES – THE DEVIL'S BRIGADE OF WWII: THE TRUE STORY OF THE FIRST SPECIAL SERVICE FORCE Episode Summary In this episode, we dive into one of the most extraordinary fighting units of World War II — a joint American‑Canadian commando force whose courage, ferocity, and unconventional tactics earned them the fearsome nickname "The Devil's Brigade." Officially known as the First Special Service Force, this elite group was formed in 1942 for missions so dangerous and demanding that only the toughest men from two nations could be trusted to carry them out. Their training was brutal. Their missions were impossible. Their legacy is legendary. From the frozen peaks of the Aleutians to the rugged mountains of Italy, the Devil's Brigade became the Allies' go‑to strike force for operations requiring stealth, speed, and sheer audacity. They scaled cliffs at night, infiltrated enemy lines, and left behind calling cards that read simply: "Das dicke Ende kommt noch" — "The worst is yet to come." This is the story of how the First Special Service Force was born, how it fought, and how its legacy lives on today in the U.S. Army Special Forces and Canadian special operations units. It's a tale of grit, sacrifice, and brotherhood forged in the harshest conditions of war.
