It’s 1885, in Richmond, Virginia. The body of a young, pregnant woman is found floating in the city’s old reservoir. At first, the coroner thinks she died by suicide. That is, until he spots bruises on her face and a tear in her dress. He hands the case over to Charles H. Epps, captain of the Richmond Police Force, who begins investigating her murder.
